After 15 years Helen Shepherd is “retiring” as a Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity volunteer. Think about that, fifteen years. In that time Helen has given 2676 hours in support of our mission. And that’s just the hours that were captured for our records.

An official groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 16th at Tradewinds subdivision in Meridian. Doing the honors were Clayton Chaney, Hummel Architects; Debbie Vincent, President Board of Trustees, Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity; Tammy de Weerd, Mayor of Meridian; Scott Madison, Intermountain Gas Company; Tom Lay, Executive Director, Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity; and Poe Htoo and Mi Mya Aye, the future owners of this house.

Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity is about to begin construction of another home in Meridian at 3407 South Arno Avenue in the Tradewinds subdivision located at the corner of Locust Grove and Victory.

Mohamed Mohamud and his two adult children Fardowsa and Ibrahim Muse closed on their new home at TitleOne Corp. on Wednesday, August 22nd. Later that day we celebrated their home dedication with a good-sized group of friends, volunteers, donors, and sponsors.

Hummel Architects, who have been creating great designs since 1896 in Boise as well as every corner of the state of Idaho and throughout the entire Northwest region have agreed to design a home, without charge, for Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity as part of their giving back to community.

An evening like no other proved to be just that! The weather was picture perfect. The abundant food and local wine and beer were crowd pleasers. Live and silent auction items were outstanding. Emcees Kevin and Brenda Mee, hosts of the number one rated morning radio show on THE BULL 101.9 FM provided humor and entertainment.

The debut of A Village of Playhouses was a tremendous success and captured the attention of thousands of visitors to The Village at Meridian during the week-long event. All five playhouses were purchased. Three of the five were donated by generous benefactors to various charities that assist women and children.

I should have known when I saw the Viking River Cruise brochure on his desk that Tod Wingfield might be considering retirement. After five years Tod is leaving ReStore at the end of May. Tod brought significant business expertise to ReStore at a time when we needed to transition from a startup to an ongoing business operation. Kevin and Brenda Mee, morning hosts on THE BULL 101.9 FM, will take to the stage to serve as the MCs for the 12th Annual Evening in the Garden, held on June 14 at FarWest Landscape & Garden Center. Kevin and Brenda will entertain guests with their sharp wit and charming personalities throughout the evening.

When I travel through the maze of traffic cones, detours, and flaggers which seems to be the typical street in Boise, I force myself to consider that this is a good thing. The street work, construction detours, and cranes on the horizon all mean that the economy is strong, business is booming, and people are back to work. Combine a vibrant economy with one of the “Best Places” to live in the United States and the result is land prices are booming as well.
